 The Stadio Olimpico

The Stadio Olimpico

We've now received word from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) as to the travel arrangements for matchday. As predicted, free buses will be laid on from a central location in the city, operating to and from the stadium. When we have full details of times we will announce them, but past experience shows that they will run from mid-afternoon up until kick off.

Free Travel To The Stadium On Matchday

Buses will be laid on to get to the stadium on matchday from Villa Borghese (at the end of the well-known Via Veneto to the north of the city centre), and we advise fans to make use of these as a way of getting to/from the stadium.

We'd also make sure to point out that it's worthwhile heading to the ground a good deal before you normally would for a domestic game, as entry/queues can take that little bit longer, and Roman traffic is renowned for being a bit of a nightmare.

The official FCO advice is to utilise the free transport and to avoid making your own way to the stadium for your own safety and security.

Public Transport To The Stadium

If you're in Rome and do want to make your own way to the ground, however, then head for Ottoviano metro station on the Red Line (Linea A), then jump a number 32 bus towards Piazzale della Farnesia.

Alternatively from the city centre get the number 910 bus to Piazza Antonio Mancini from outside Termini station, and walk through the park at the end of the line and across the Ponte Duca D’Aosta bridge to the ground. Please note, however, that in previous trips to Rome that this bridge has been the scene of trouble between visiting fans and Roma fans.

Those in possession of a match ticket will benefit from free public transport (bus, metro, tram) in Rome from the 26th to 28th May, according to the FCO website.

A taxi to the ground from the city centre should cost no more than about €15.

About the Stadium

Manchester United fans have been allocated the Curva Nord (North End) of the stadium. They have an allocation of 19,500 tickets out of the matchday capacity of just over 66,000, priced between £65 and £183 depending upon their location. For full details of application arrangements, visit the Manchester United Official Website.

If you've got hold of tickets and want to know where your block is, then check out this stadium plan, showing the numbered sections.

The Stadio Olimpico is located in the north of Rome, in the Foro Italico Sportpark around 6km from the city centre. It was commissioned by Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in the 1930s (the complex was initially known as the Foro Mussolini), and the stadium officially opened in 1938. Thankfully the ground has undergone several renovations since then, and now boasts a capacity of 72,700, with some much-improved facilities within. Home to both Rome’s clubs, AS Roma and Lazio, it is the home of some of the most fiercely contested derby matches in Europe.

The Olimpico has played host to major football matches before, notably the World Cup Final in 1990 which saw West Germany beat Argentina 1-0, and the finals of the 1968 and 1980 European Championships, won by Italy and Germany respectively.

This year is the 4th time that the venue will decide the European Club Champions. The Stadio Olimpico was the scene of 2 of Liverpool’s European Cup final victories, in 1977 against Borussia Moenchengladbach and in 1984 against the home side AS Roma. It also hosted Juventus’ Champions League victory over Ajax in 1996. Perhaps ominously, 2 of the 3 previous finals here went to penalties.
