Poll - Do you back Premier League play-off?
Yesterday’s Guardian saw the ever-excellent David Conn write that the Premier League is to discuss the idea of a play-off system with the winners taking the fourth Champions League spot.
Fourth place currently guarantees entry to the Champions League qualifier stage but new rules would see the clubs finishing fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh slugging it out in a play-off system.
Exact details haven’t been confirmed – would it be seeded, one legged or two? – but the idea was run by the Premier League’s clubs at the beginning on February and chief executive Richard Scudamore tasked with bringing back further details in April.
The ‘big four’ of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are opposed to the idea although most other clubs are thought to be in favour – but what do you think?
Will this dilute the ‘Champions’ League to extremes as teams who finish a lowly seventh are sent to represent the Premier League in Europe’s top competition OR is this the perfect way to redistribute cash and save midtable clubs’ seasons from being over in February.
This poll is now closed.
