The folks behind Non-League Day (NLD) are a better organised bunch than most and they’re already preparing for NLD 2012. NLD was launched in 2010 and encourages supporters to check out their local non-league side.
Every international break half-a-million fans are left without a fixture due to gaps in the domestic calendar. It’s a perfect time for those fans to explore their nearest non-league side(s) and experience the game at that level.
Initiated by QPR fan James Doe NLD is supported by the Football Supporters’ Federation and has received national media coverage from the likes of the BBC, Guardian, Sky Sports, and Talksport. Speaking to the FSF prior to 2011’s event fellow NLD coordinator Mike Bayly explained why he got involved.
“The atmosphere is always friendly, the football on show can be of a very good standard, and you can get your admission, a few drinks and something to eat for under £20. Many clubs let kids in for free and offer heavily discounted tickets for senior citizens,” said Bayly. “Non-League Day is as much about supporting the local community as it is about watching football.”
The organisers of NLD will meet to discuss 2012's event on Sunday 5th February from 2pm at Wingate & Finchley FC (venue tbc - register with james@nonleagueday.co.uk and you'll be informed of any change). Topics for discussion at next month’s preparatory meeting will include possible dates, media/sponsorship strategies, charity partners, staggered kick-off times, and ground hops.
Can’t attend? You can still help. A little nearer the time you could contact your local paper and offer to write an article explaining the aims of NLD. If a full article sounds a little daunting point your paper in the direction of NLD’s press release and offer to speak to a journalist about – this helps provide local context and increases the paper’s chance of covering the event.
