The FSF has learned that Morecambe Football Club are to become the first league club in England or Wales to incorporate Safe Standing areas into their new stadium.
At a shareholders AGM last night it was revealed that directors viewed an all-seated stadium as inappropriate and the club’s new 7,000 stadium would include 5,000 Safe Standing places with plenty of room to develop should the club be promoted from League Two.
The Shrimps, who hope to move into the new ground in time for the 20010-11 season, will raise significant amounts from the sale of their current ground’s land. The club will therefore be debt free and ownership of the newly built ground will rest with the Trust that owned has owned their current stadium since the 1920s.
The move will be welcomed by Safe Standing campaigners, including the FSF, who have long argued that with new technology and crowd management techniques standing is not inherently unsafe.
