Rivalries set aside as fans pay tribute to Ukraine crash victims

Newcastle United fans gathered at St James's Park this afternoon to pay their respects to John Alder and Liam Sweeney. Both fans lost their lives when the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, on which they were travelling to watch their team's friendly games in New Zealand, was shot down over Ukraine.

The Toon Army have been joined by thousands of supporters from other clubs in expressing condolences over the two deaths. It's a tragedy that has bridged traditional rivalries in grief and sympathy.

There's no better evidence for that than the appeal set up by Sunderland fans to raise £100 for a floral tribute to John Alder and Liam Sweeney. The total raised has now passed an incredible £25,000 with fans of many clubs donating money.
