Originally, with its inauguration in 1966 it was called Estadio Manzanares which was changed in the 1990s to Vincente Calderón to reflect the importance of a famous Athletico club president.
The stadium hosted three games in the 1982 FIFA World Cup.

Only the main stand of the ground is covered the other stands have no roof.
Take the Metro line no 5 (green line) to Pirámides station. From there walk downhill to the ground. Alternatively, the stadium is also served by almost a dozen bus routes on a matchday such as lines no. 17, 18, 23, 34, 35, 36, 50, 116, 118 & 119.
