AS Roma

History

The Stadio Olimpico was built in 1936 and has a capacity of 82,000.

It was the site of the 1960 Summer Olympics, but has also served as the location of the 1987 World Athletics Championships and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The stadium will also be hosting the UEFA Champions League Final in 2009.

It is the ground where Liverpool have won two of their European Cups: 1977 they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 and again in 1984 they beat AS Roma after a penalty shoot-out when regular time ended 1-1.

Location of the Ground in the City

The stadium is located app. 6km from the city centre in the North of Rome in the Foro Italico sportpark.

Home Supporters Information

Both Roma and Lazio play their home matches at the Stadio Olimpico. The hardcore Roma supporters, the Ultras, are based in the Curva Sud which marks the stand behind the goal in the south

Away Supporters Information

Away fans usually find themselves at the opposite end in the Distinti Ospiti, in the northwest corner of the ground.

General Ground Information

Although the stadium may look impressive at first glance and the views from the stands are excellent from wherever you find yourself, facilities inside the ground – including seats - are rather poor and filthy. The ground has undergone quite a deal of renovation, however, ahead of the 2009 Champions League Final, and so hopefully things will have improved on the inside.

To enter the ground, you have to scan the barcode at of the electronic turnstiles before you have to undergo a body check, usually carried out by police officers (Carabinieri). It is advisable to arrive at the ground in good time before kick-off as the entry procedure takes its time and queues are likely to occur.

Getting to the Ground (By Public Transport)

Hop on a train of metro line A (from Termini train station) following the directions to Ottaviano/ S. Pietro station and take the bus line 32 to Piazzale della Farnesina which stops close by the exits.

Getting to the Ground (By Car)

From Milano, Firenze or Bologna (Autostrada A1): Take the exit that goes into the G.R.A. (Gran Raccordo Anulare, kind of Beltway) following the directions to Flaminia road.

Then take the exit 5 (called Flaminia), and here towards the stadium (or also, Foro Italico).
