General Introduction

Porto, along with Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, are one of the three major clubs in Portugal.

The club colours of blue and white were chosen as at the time when the club was founded in 1893, they were also incorporated in the Portuguese flag. They also represent pureness, calmness and stillness of mind; not very typical core values of a football club, some might argue.

As with all of our guides, if there is anything missing from the following pages that you need to know then feel free to drop us an email and we'll do our best to find it out for you.

FC Porto was founded in 1893 by wine salesman Antònio Nicolau de Almeida who had just first seen a football game on one of his trips to England.

Porto have twice been crowned continental champions. The first European Champion Clubs’ Cup success came in the 1987 final at the expense of FC Bayern Munich following a 2-1 win in Vienna.

The club also lifted the 2003 UEFA Cup with a victory at Celtic FC’s expense in Seville before claiming the ultimate prize for a second time 12 months later with a 3-0 defeat of AS Monaco FC.

Porto also appeared in the 1984 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final, losing 2-1 to Juventus in Basle.
