General Introduction

Watching the most successful German club in the big ‘inflatable boat’ (German: ‘Schlauchboot’, nickname for the Allianz Arena) should definitely be an exciting experience!

The self-proclaimed ‘world city with a heart’, home town of the FCB and capital of Bavaria, München, offers loads of other things to do and see in a wide range between Bavarian traditions and modern lifestyle.

As with all of our guides, if there is anything missing from the following pages that you need to know then feel free to drop us an email and we'll do our best to find it out for you.

Brief Ground Location

The Allianz Arena is located in the northern suburbs of the city near Fröttmaning, 5 miles from the city centre at the intersection of the A9 and A99 autobahn.

Brief Club History

Without doubt, Bayern München is the most successful club in German football, one of the most powerful and richest as well as with more than 130,000 members last but not least the third largest club in the world after SL Benfica and FC Barcelona. more...

Their politics are equally characterized by massive marketing and complete business orientation combined with basically buying whoever they want by offering sums other clubs are hardly able to match. All this makes Bayern München, the club, which is either loved by its fans or somehow considered/disliked or even hated as arrogant yuppies by almost all the other football supporters in Germany...

The unpopularity also lead to one of their nicknames as ‘FC Hollywood’ apart from simply calling them ‘die Bayern’ or ‘FCB’ – the last two names however, are most commonly used.

Founded in 1900, the FCB had its first successful time in the 1930s when they won the national championship in 1932. After the 2nd WorldWar, they still remained a strong team but without either great success or being one of the founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963. But once they got promoted, they have immediately become Germany’s no. 1.

They have played in the top tier of the league winning the national Championship incredible 19 times since, topped by 13 triumphs as German Cup Champions as well as by 5 titles on UEFA’s football stage! These figures can certainly tell their own tale on the success of the club in a league that by no means lacks adequate competitors ...

The Bayern are currently run by a bunch of ex-star players, foremost of which is club president and internationally most known former player Franz Beckenbauer. Others include Uli Hoeness, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Gerd “der Bomber” Müller who is probably the best goalscorer the world has ever seen.

Other great players were Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann. Expectedly, the squad of this season is also a fine collection of international top players, among them Oliver Kahn and not less than six other players of the German national team, the captain of the Brazilian Seleção Lúcio as well as Zé Roberto, Luca Toni as one of the Italian World Cup Champions, the French national team players Franck Ribéry and Willy Sagnol and the list goes on and on.

In correspondence with their success and to further underline their unpopularity, the Bayern count a big prawn sandwich brigade and loads of glory hunters among their spectators but fortunately also still a quite large group of genuine dedicated supporters. These fans are to find in every nook and cranny all over Germany comparable to the followers of clubs like Manchester United or Real Madrid.

Fans & Foes

Bayern Munich lists the incredible number of around 2,200 fan clubs and more than 130,000 members. The fan scene is known for being quite well-organised. The  ‘Schickeria München’ is one of the liveliest and most active groups among them completed by groups like the ‘Südkurve 73’, the ‘Munichmaniacs 1996’ or the ‘Red Munichs 89’. more...

Apart from friendly relations between certain groups of Bayern supporters and fan groups from other German clubs (e.g. between the ‘Schickeria München’ and the ‘Ultrà Sankt Pauli’), the Bayern are in general more likely to have loads of rivals like the 1.FC Nürnberg.

A former friendship with VfL Bochum has fizzled out. As a matter-of-course almost, FCB’s traditional arch rival is the other local club TSV 1860 Munich, however, they share the stadium, the Allianz Arena.
