Brief Ground Location
The Estadio Vincente Calderón is located in the heart of Madrid by the banks of the River Manzanares.
Accordingly, the ground is conveniently located just outside the city’s central district on the south side and can easily be reached by metro or bus. Its close proximity to the centre of Madrid means even a taxi ride isn’t out of the question!
Brief Club History
The Club was founded on 9 October 1939. Actually, a previous club was originally founded on 26 April 1903 as Athletic Club de Madrid by three Basque students living in Madrid. The founders saw the new club as a branch of Athletic Bilbao.
In 1904 they were joined by dissident members of Madrid FC. During the 1970s they became known as los indios.more...
This was allegedly due to the club signing several South American players after the restrictions on signing foreign players was lifted. However there are a number of counter theories which claim they were so named because their stadium is camped on the river bank or because los indios were the traditional enemy of los blancos - the whites. The latter nickname refers to the club’s city rivals Real Madrid.
Althletico Madrid has participated nine times in the UEFA Champions League and 19 times in the UEFA Cup. They won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2007. ...less
Fans & Foes
The biggest group but also rather right-wing are the Ultras of Atletico Madrid called “Frente Atletico” which are based on the bottom tier of the southern stand.
Their biggest rivals are the Yomus Ultras from Valencia and, of course, the Ultras Sur of the big foe Real Madrid. But also left-wing groups like Herri Norte Taldea from Atletico Bilbao do by no means cultivate friendly relations with Frente Atletico.
Apart from that, there are loads of other supporters of los colchoneros which are widely spread all over the world. There are even official supporters clubs of Atletico Madrid in Northern Ireland, Holland, Germany and Denmark.
