Brief Club History
APOEL were founded in 1926, and are the most successful side in Cypriot football history. They've won the national championship a total of 20 times, as well as 19 Cypriot Cup triumphs.
APOEL have never had great success in Europe, although they do regularly reach the qualifying rounds of the Champions League or early rounds of the UEFA Cup.
Fans & Foes
Their main competitors are naturally city rivals Omonia Nicosia, with whom they share their stadium. Although much more recently founded than APOEL (in the 1940s), they are almost as successful, having won 19 titles and 12 Cups. Omonia are hoping to move out of the GSP stadium in the near future to a new, purpose built stadium on the outskirts of Nicosia.
APOEL are one of the largest clubs in Cyprus, although their average attendance at home league games is under 10,000.
