General Introduction

Use the links on the left to navigate through the guide, whether it's information on eating and drinking in Athens, or what to see and do once you're there, we've got it covered.

As with all of our guides, if there is anything missing from the following pages that you need to know then feel free to drop us an email and we'll do our best to find it out for you.

Brief Ground Location

The Olympic Stadium (or OAKA) is located in the north of the city in the municipality of Maroussi. It’s about 5 ½ miles from the city centre and around 14 miles from the airport.

Brief Club History

AEK (or Athlitiki Enosis Konstantinoupoleos, which means Athletic Union of Constantinople) were formed in 1924 in Athens. They were named after Constantinople (now Istanbul) as the original founders of the side were Greek refugees returning from Turkey.

AEK have established themselves as one of the premier sides in Greece, and have played their games at the Olympic Stadium (or OAKA) since the demolition of their former home, the Nikos Goumas Stadium, in 2003. Tentative plans are afoot for the club to have their own, purpose built football stadium built in the near future, allowing a move away from the OAKA.

Their European pedigree extends to a semi-final place in the UEFA Cup in 1977, although they do manage to regularly qualify for continental competition.

Club Honours

AEK have won 14 Greek titles - the first coming in 1939 and most recently in 2008, which was their first triumph in over a decade.

They are 13 times Greek Cup champions, as well as picking up 2 Greek League Cups and 3 Greek Super Cups.
