The better hotels are located around the Old Port area (where budget-options are pretty much non-existent) and as you head east out of the centre, alongside the cornice.
Accommodation can be hard to come by, especially in peak season.
Budget Accomadation
The Hotel Vertigois the most centrally located of the budget hostels in Marseilles, to be found at 42 Rue de Petites Maries in the typical area of Belsunce, tel. 0033 4 91 91 07 11, e-mail: contact@hotelvertigo.fr . The property opened in 2007 and is five minutes walk from the central train and bus station and 10 minutes from the Old Port. Dorm beds are available from €23,50 pppn, double rooms from €25,00 pppn.
Alternatively, though a bit further away from the city centre (about 4km from the train station), boasting great views and the atmosphere of an ancient building (see picture), there is the youth hostel Bois Luzy at Allée des Primevères, tel. 0033 491 490618.
Finally, if you’d prefer to stay at a really cheap but convenient place in close proximity to a beautiful beach even in December, book at the youth hostel Bonneveine at Impasse Bonfils Avenue Joseph Vidal, tel. 0033 491 176330, e-mail: marseille-bonneveine@fauj.org . Dorm beds are available from €14,50 pppn and a double bedroom cost around €33 pppn.
The hostel is 5 km south of the city in a residential district near the main beach Plage du Prado; take metro No. 2 to Rond Point du Prado and take the No 44 bus from there to Bonnefon stop which is about 200 metres from the hostel.
