General Info
The Old Port is one of the main tourist areas and where there are also a few English and Irish pubs.
Local Foods & Beverages
The French love Pastis, an alcoholic beverage made from aniseed and spices, which is actually just drinkable if it is mixed with water that gives the drink a murky bright yellow colour.
France is also famous for its cuisine and Marseille, in particular, unifies an extraordinary mixture of delicious specialities either of African, Middle Eastern or French origin. more...
The most famous French dishes in Marseilles are Pied Paquets, a dish prepared from pig’s trotters, sheep or pork tripe and lard, and the more popular Bouillabaise, a rich red soup full of chunks of fish.
A top place for Boullabaise is the Chez Madie Les Galinettes at 138 Quai du Port.
Those, who are hungry but also into wine, could get their ideal combination of local food and best French wines at Le Bistro à Vin, a rustic place at 17 Rue Sainte. Apart from that, Couscous is THE local food and manifests the blend of Mediterranean and African culture in the city. In the Rue de la Republique that comes across the harbour, there are several Couscous Restaurants. Heading east from the Vieux Port on the Rue Musée, you can find the Le Femina, an affordable and traditional Algerian restaurant.
The Cours d’Estienne-d’Orves and the Cours Julien are the main drinking areas, latter of which is an alternative district and student area.
There are also dozens of bars lining the waterfront at the Old Port.
Irish & English Pubs
Believe it or not, we couldn't find a single English or Irish pub in Marseille!
