General Info

Munchen has over 6,000 licensed establishments throughout the city but has no real entertainment district as such. There are lots of bars near to Marienplatz in the centre and also in Munchner Freiheit on the way to the stadium.

The extended drinking hours across the city mean that most supporters are more likely to stay in the pubs until the early hours rather than pay the higher drinks prices and entrance charges at a club.

Munich is reasonably liberal and drinking in the streets is tolerated, but as with most cities, excessive drunkenness is not advised, especially in public places. There is nowhere in the city that needs to be avoided.

Local Foods & Beverages

Beer, beer and more beer!! Munchen is home to several large breweries and has very strict rules governing the brewing of its beer. Most people will have heard of Lowenbrau, but we highly recommend Augustiner – not one hangover!!

Being home to the world famous Oktoberfest ensures that Munchen definitely has no shortage of drinking establishments and you should always be able to find a place where you can get a beer without too long a wait.

When in Munchen it is essential to visit a Beer Garden or Hall. Munchen has over twenty and the atmosphere can be fantastic. Augustiner Bräustüberl in the city centre is probably the first bar that many coming from the train station will stumble upon, as it is located between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz. The beer is good, the service fast and the atmosphere welcoming.

Augustiner-Keller is the oldest beer garden in Munchen and this one would definitely be our recommendation especially as it is only a 5 minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof (turn left down Arnulfstrasse, and head away from the town centre).

A massive beer garden outside under chestnut trees and always full of locals (some of the others can feel very touristy), gives this place a feel of authenticity and makes you think ‘Now this is Munich!’ Hofbräuhaus, the most famous beer hall in the world, is always jammed with tourists, but is a definite must-see. Old men with burly beards and potbellies wear lederhosen and play traditional Bavarian music.

As with most German pubs and beer halls, your drinks are generally recorded by crosses on a beer mat and then tallied up just before you leave.

Main Drinking Areas

Munchen has over 6,000 licensed establishments throughout the city but has no real entertainment district as such. There are lots of bars near to Marienplatz in the centre and also in Munchner Freiheit on the way to the stadium.

Local Bars

There is also a Hard Rock Café opposite the Hofbrauhaus. Schillers Sports Bar is probably best known to English fans but there are a great number of much better bars a short distance from the train station.

A lot of the clubs in Munchen are situated on the outskirts of town although there are some near Ostbahnhof station and in the city centre. One of them is the Cord club (Sonnenstr.18, Karlsplatz station) where every kind of music can be played depending on the djs.

Centrally located clubs focused on House music, R’n’B and Clubsound are the maxsuite (Maximilianplatz 16, U-Bahn station Odeonsplatz) and the Loggia Lounge (Falkenturmstrasse 6, U-Bahn station Odeonsplatz). Friends of Northern soul music and 60s sound are welcome in the famous Atomic Café (Neuturmstrasse 5, Marienplatz station). Cover charges in the club scene in Munich can be up to and even above €10 and expect to pay more for your drinks. Nightclubs operate a dress code and usually, football colours are not allowed.

The extended drinking hours across the city mean that most supporters are more likely to stay in the pubs until the early hours rather than pay the higher drinks prices and entrance charges at a club.

Irish & English Pubs

Whilst there are no English pubs, there are several Irish and Aussie bars – no surprise there then! Decent places to drink include Kilians Irish Bar and Ned Kellys Aussie Bar, near to the central cathedral.

Restaurants

Munchen has over 6,000 licensed establishments throughout the city but has no real entertainment district as such. There are lots of bars near to Marienplatz in the centre and also in Munchner Freiheit on the way to the stadium.

There are restaurants all over Munchen serving food from across the world. Most in the city centre are aimed at the tourist market and can, therefore, be a little more expensive (but do have English menus!!).

There are also a lot of restaurants in Munchner Freiheit and for those who like Italian we can highly recommend ‘Pasta e Basta’. The food in Ned Kellys Aussie bar was cheap and of a very good standard.

Fast Food Outlets

Another cheap and easy solution is to try one of the many fast food outlets around the train station, including McDonalds.
