Despite the fact that Barcelona is one of the Spain's most expensive cities, an increase in hotel rooms and alternative accommodation, especially self-catering, has seen prices fall which means that you can now get decent rooms for a reasonable price.
In most ‘albergues juveniles’ (youth hostels) you’ll be charged extra than the given price for sheets and towels. The local tourist office will have a more comprehensive list of sites available.
Best Areas to Stay
The Gothic area, Catalan name Barri Gòtic, is at the cheaper end of the market and contains more affordable accommodation and restaurants whilst still having most of the major sites within walking distance. As with most European cities, pickpocketing and muggings are common, especially in this area, so it is worth making sure that you are aware of this if you’re staying in this district.
The Eixample district, to the north of Barri Gòtic includes Plaça de Catalunya and Universitat metro stops and is therefore within a short train ride from anywhere in the city. Whilst hotel accommodation is generally slightly more expensive in this area, it is worth paying for the location and for the number of good restaurants within a short stroll.
Sants and Plaza Espanya sees a concentration of hotels aimed at conference delegates and is handy for anyone who wants to be close to the airport. It is, however, a distance from the city centre so probably only advisable for anyone just travelling in and staying over the night of the game.
Most of the cheapest accommodation can be found in the side streets off and around the Ramblas, particulary in the Barri Gotic between the Ramblas and Plaça de Sant Jaume.
