General Information

Aalborg, Denmark’s fourth largest city, sits on the narrowest point of the Limfjord in the north of the country, which is the body of water that separates the two main parts of Jutland. A key harbour and trading point in its past, Aalborg is now pushing at the forefront of sustainable development despite its modest size. Indeed, it played host to the first European conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns in 1994.

Main Tourist Sights

The Aalborghus Slot (Aalborg Castle, part of the grounds of which you can see below) survives in the town centre. Initially built by the King in 1550, it remains standing to this day. There are many examples of timber-framed 16th and 17th century buildings in the town, of which Jens Bang’s House (built in 1624 by a local merchant) is the most prominent and well known.

Aalborg is possibly best known, however, for the Lindholm Høje, a Viking burial ground dating back to the iron-age. Located roughly 15 minutes out of town, some 700 or so graves are marked here, and entry is free. There is also museum as well to exhibit the site’s history with a small entry fee.

Other Things to Do

If you’re travelling in the summer, then Aalborg plays host to a renowned Carnival (below), typically held at the end of May. Spread over 2 days it attracts huge visitor numbers. I don’t think you’ll be seeing the locals dressed up like this at most other times of the year, unfortunately!

Getting Around By Public Transport

The city buses leave from JF Kennedys Plads and pass the main city-centre stops of Østerågade and Nytorv. The bus fare for one journey is around £2; you can also get a klippekort, which is valid for 10 rides for around £12.

Information on tickets, routes and schedules is available at Nordjyllands Trafikselskab (Travel Office) at the bus station on JF Kennedys Plads.

Getting Around By Taxi

The main taxi rank is located at the train station at JF Kennedys Plads, or you can order one by calling 98 10 10 10, or 98 12 48 00.
