The choice of hotels and hostels in the city is pretty limited - Alkmaar is not known as a major tourist destination and so quite a few people tend to stay in Amsterdam and travel in to the city for matches.
The main concentration of hotels in the region is by the coast, rather than in the city, in towns such as Egmond and Bergen (the latter being recommended). These are easily reachable by bus from the city centre, and are within 5-10 miles of Alkmaar.
Best Areas to Stay
With the city being so small, there's no 'best area', as everything's within walking distance. The main city centre is at most a mile across.
Hotels
There are a handful of hotels in the city. The Hotel Stad en Land, which is reasonably small, is directly opposite the station, as well as two other main hotels - the Golden Tulip on Arcadialaan and the Amrath Hotel on Geestersingel.
Alkmaar's Tourist Information site is the best if you're intending on staying in the city. If you're opting for a stop in Amsterdam or elsewhere, then the usual suspects of the likes of Booking.com or Hostelbookers will be the best bet.
